Rep. Dean Phillips’ (D-MN) long-shot presidential candidacy might have become an even longer shot. The Democrat running against President Joe Biden finished fourth in Tuesday’s Michigan primary, losing not just to Biden but also to a write-in campaign and to Marianne Williamson.
The final results showed Biden winning about 81 percent of voters in the state’s Democratic primary, with the “uncommitted” write-in campaign from voters protesting Biden’s policies on the Israel-Hamas war coming in second, followed by Williamson, the author and “spiritual leader” who dropped out of the race earlier this month but still appeared on the ballot.
Despite that utter humiliation, Phillips tried to paint a sunny — perhaps “Minnesota nice”? — picture of what his loss might mean:
If you resent me for the audacity to challenge Joe Biden, at least you’ll appreciate how relatively strong I’m making him look among primary voters!

But that only got him dragged further, with users mocking him for losing to “the Unicorn lady” and “making Uncommitted and the Crystal Lady look strong.”
Well, that Unicorn lady heard the people of Michigan, and after her zombie campaign beat an actual active candidate, she raised it from the dead and jumped back in the race on Wednesday morning.

The embarrassing showing for Phillips, who has also floated the idea of a unity ticket with Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, was a dive from his better showing in New Hampshire, where he won almost 20 percent of the vote in their primary, though Biden was the write-in candidate in that primary, making his win more impressive. Another factor to take into account: the AI-generated robocall made to callers in New Hampshire that urged them not to vote for Biden — in Biden’s voice — that was created by a street magician hired by a consultant on Phillips’ campaign.
Phillips denied any knowledge of the robocall.
