There’s worry President Joe Biden could end up “embarrassed” with the outcome of the Michigan Democratic primary, CNN’s Chris Wallace reported on Tuesday.
During a discussion with CNN’s Abby Phillip about the upcoming race and the influence Biden’s support of Israel in the Israel-Hamas war will have, Wallace revealed a “top Democratic official” expressed to him concern that a large number of primary voters could vote “uncommitted.”
“I was talking to a top Michigan Democrat over the weekend who said, you know, it’s not just Arab Americans, there are young people, there are people of color, Blacks and Hispanics, who have a lot of doubts about Joe Biden and, you know, another candidate like Dean Phillips might not be able to put on much of a show against Biden, this Michigan Democratic official was saying, ‘I’m worried about uncommitted.’ You know, it’s really a vote of no confidence or lack of confidence in Biden and this official was worried it could do well enough in the primary a week from tomorrow to embarrass Joe Biden,” Wallace said.
Biden won Michigan against Trump in 2020 by just 154,000, and the state has one of the country’s largest Arab American and Muslim populations.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) previously encouraged Democrats in the state to vote against Biden. Tlaib is a vocal critic of Israel and has supported a ceasefire, while the White House has stood behind Israel’s right to defend itself, though they have criticized the thousands of civilian casualties in Gaza. Tlaib previously accused Biden of supporting “genocide.”
“If you want us to be louder, then come here and vote uncommitted,” Tlaib said in a video posted to social media.
